After scoring what he thought would be the game-winning touchdown during Buffalo’s eventual 28-24 loss to the New York Jets, Steve Johnson pretended to shoot himself in the leg, mocking Jets receiver Plaxico Burress, who spent almost two years in prison after accidentally shooting himself at a New York nightclub three years ago.
Referees gave the Bills a 15-yard penalty for Johnson’s excessive celebration, which gave the Jets great field position to come back and score. Considering the Bills lost by four points, you could say that was the difference in the game.
To his credit, Johnson was apologetic after the game.
“It hurt our team. It was very stupid of me going through that, and I feel like I cost our team by doing that,” Johnson said. “It was a bad decision. It’s irrelevant whether or not I rehearsed it or not. At the end of the day, it cost our team seven points.”
