Jacksonville Jaguars Fire Coach Jack Del Rio, Will Sell Team But Keep It In Florida

News

Jacksonville Jaguars’ owner Wayne Weaver announced today that coach Jack Del Rio has been fired and that he is selling the team to businessman Shahid Khan, who will keep the team in Jacksonville.

By firing Jack Del Rio now, the Jaguars get a jump on the competition in trying to lure a top assistant to take their head coaching job.

“I told Jack I appreciated the nine years that he served the organization … but I said we deserve better. The community deserves better,” Weaver said Tuesday at the news conference. “We’ve been very average over the last few years. I take responsibility for a lot of that — making some mistakes in some personnel things.”

Also, general manager Gene Smith received a three-year extension, Weaver said.
