Outside of the Twilight franchise Summit Entertainment doesn’t have much going for it. While The Hurt Locker was a Best Picture winner, toppling the billion-dollar hit Avatar, the film made less than $20 million domestic. The studio’s only major hit outside of adapting Stephenie Meyer’s novels to film is Red starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Helen Mirren.
But the November 18th release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has helped box office business, needless to say. In ten days the film has generated $223 million domestic, making it one of only a dozen films to surpass $220 million in a ten-day span. And worldwide, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has netted $508 million as of today.
Said Summit Entertainment’s co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger: “We couldn’t be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years. Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella.”
What they failed to add is that they got one more of these films to squeeze every last bit out of the franchise.
With $508 million accumulated so far, Breaking Dawn will need another $202 million worldwide if it is to surpass New Moon‘s gross.
