It’s obvious now that the “fight of the century” between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. won’t be happening in May, as was originally rumored. Now, however, it appears that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will fight for a November date for this big bucks encounter.
Arum spoke with the Manila Standard by telephone and had this to say:
“What we are trying to accomplish assuming he (Mayweather) is going to fight in May and Manny is going to fight in June, is that we are pressing to see if we can get a contract signed between the two fighters for November.”
Many people still think that this fight will find a way to fall apart but Arum wants people excited in case he can pull this off:
“That way the people will be assured that the fight is going to happen and there won’t be any of this nonsense which we can put behind us so we can do a huge, huge promotion.”
Obviously, negotiations hit a snag when Mayweather came out of the gate and asked for 70-30 or 60-40 split of revenue after originally agreeing to a 50-50 split, so the two sides are a long ways off from finally signing on the dotted line.
