Three Washed Up ’80s Actors In One Sequel? Twins Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito to be Joined by Eddie Murphy

News, Projects, Top Story

It was an amusing ’80s comedy that really didn’t need or warrant a sequel. However it has a star (Arnold Schwarzenegger) looking to make a comeback with a familiar concept and a secondary character (Danny DeVito) who is absolutely necessary for a sequel. The Hollywood Reporter has noted that Triplets, a sequel to Twins, is in development. The interesting twist to it, for lack of a better word, is that Eddie Murphy will be starring as the third brother they would be just finding out about.

Per THR: “The project doesn’t have a director at this early stage — Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original, would only act as a producer with his Montecito Picture Co. cohorts Joe Medjuk, Tom Pollock and Ali Bell, according to sources — but the hunt is on for writers to develop the idea. Insiders caution that no substantial creative discussions have taken place between Universal and Montecito.”

What does this mean? With a good script and a couple of actors who have shown great chemistry in the past, as Arnold and DeVito also starred in Junior together, Triplets could be a fun film with the addition of Murphy. And it’s not a foreign concept to make a sequel almost thirty years removed from the original; Midnight Run is in development with Robert De Niro attached and Brett Ratner potentially directing. So it’s not out of the question it could happen; it could be made inexpensively and turn a profit fairly easily.

The one downside is that it’s a sign that Arnold may be attaching himself to familiar action projects, he’s also reaching into the well for things that are less risky. Triplets is the equivalent of another Terminator film at this point or doing Red Heat 2.
