CNN recently published a report on the historic Memphis feud that occurred between WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler and actor Andy Kaufman 30 years ago. While Lawler offered no comments to CNN for the story, former Memphis TV announcers Lance Russell and Dave Brown did provide their insight on one of the most interesting and emotionally charged storylines to ever hit pro wrestling.
Said Brown, “They’d be at the (Mid-South) Coliseum, supposedly trying to kill each other, and then I’d get off the 10 o’clock newscast and walk into the newsroom, and Jerry and Andy would be sitting in an edit booth discussing what had happened and where to go from there … I found that fascinating – that they worked so closely together to make sure it worked. If Lawler had not been totally on board with it and if Andy had not been totally on board with it, it would never have worked at all.”
