EW’s First Look At Tarantino’s Django Unchained Begs The Question Is It Christmas Yet?

It’s always an exciting time when a new Quentin Tarantino movie goes into production. And thankfully, fans don’t have to wait nearly as long between features like they did when he was away from the camera in between Jackie Brown and Kill Bill. Arriving two years after his Oscar-winning Inglourious Basterds, Tarantino returns with Django Unchained – a Civil War-set spaghetti western starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, and Christoph Waltz.

Set to open on Christmas Day, Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first two photos from the movie and has gotten some reactions from star Jamie Foxx on what people can expect.

The character Foxx plays, the titular Django, is what he describes to be a cross between Shaft’s “Richard Roundtree [and] Clint Eastwood.” When asked if it will be controversial, Foxx remarks, “You kidding me?”

Plot Synopsis: After being sent to a chain gang after rebelling against his owners, Django is recruited by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to help him settle an old score. Django has information that Waltz’s Dr. King Schultz needs, so the German mercenary liberates the slave and promises that if he helps him kill the Brittle brothers, Django’s old owners, he’ll make it worth his while.

Along the way, the duo end up crossing paths with hammer-wielding plantation owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who likes to make his toughest slaves fight to the death in gladiatorial combat. “Candie is a businessman who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that’s where my wife ends up being,” Foxx says. To find her, “we have to get in good with Candie, by me playing a valet for Christoph’s character.”
