Savage Hawkman #9 News & Spoilers: A Mysterious Thanagarian Red Head Makes New 52 Debut?

News, Spoilers, Top Story

I recently wrote about DC Comics’ New 52 plans for Hawkman and Hawkgirl / woman in light of (1) the new Earth 2 “second wave” series getting a Hawkgirl to take Batman’s spot on the Justice Society, and (2) Rob Liefeld leading the creative team on a more sci-fi Savage Hawkman as of May’s issue.

Earth 2 gets a very non-Thanagarian Kendra Saunders as Hawkgirl while it seems that the New 52’s Earth Prime gets its first glimpse of a red headed Hawkwoman in Savage Hawkman #9.

The story also opens with Carter Hall (really Katar Hol of the planet Thanagar unknown to the series lead) exploring the powers and history behind the Thanagarian Nth Metal that has bonded with his flesh. This enables his armor, wings and weapons to manifest from himself. Shayera Thal, although not named in the issue, in the pre-Flashpoint continuity was the partner / wife of alien cop Katar Hol.

The previous creative team on Savage Hawkman set up the Thanagarian subplots and I’m glad Rob Liefeld and team are picking them up.

I’m also just LOVING Joe Bennett back on Hawkman. He draws flying barbarians well. Plus Art Thibert proves himself yet again to be a top inker in the business. :)

So, what’s in store in the pages of Savage Hawkman ahead? Well, it’s clear that the creative team is picking up some of Tony Daniel’s threads, but also putting Carter Hall in new predicaments (per end of the issue cliffhanger) while also exploring his (Silver Age) roots… with a New 52 twist no doubt.

Fun times head and I’m so pleased that it “appears” that Shayera Thal, the Hawkwoman in Silver and Bronze Ages, appears to be debuting in the New 52. :)
