THE RAGER! Jerry Lawler Has Gone Over My Limit (Thoughts on OTL, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan)

Columns, Site News, Top Story

So after the festivities of the past couple days, I’ve come to several conclusions:
I’ve got to hand it to WWE for cranking out some solid post-Wrestlemania pay per views (overlooking Cena vs Ace for the moment) when usually this time is a pocket of suck (I’m trying to make that phrase a thing and hopefully it works out better than attitudinal did for Cole).
OTL Punk vs Bryan was pretty fantastic but I’m sure that’s all everyone else is gonna talk about so I won’t bore you too much with my thoughts on the match.
Jerry Lawler was especially bad at commentating but I will discuss that more at the end.

As for Over The Limit itself:

Over the Top Rope Challenge:
I really liked this idea and I’m assuming this wasn’t something planned ahead of time but I enjoy how it fits into the idea of PPV name (a good “ah, I see what you did there” kinda thing).
Of course we all knew Christian was gonna take it the moment we learned of his return but that didn’t stop me from being hopeful for William Regal because I love that human being and you should too.
I think the high spot for this match was definitely Tyson Kidd. This guy has been wowing all of us on NXT for quite a bit so it was great to see him get his own spot in a PPV.
I know I’m jumping ahead a bit but what do people think of this Christian face turn all of a sudden? He was still a heel leading into Wrestlemania but was pulled due to an injury setback and so we know he wasn’t pulled because they had other plans for him. This just seems kinda random and I would have like to have been a fly on the wall when that decision was being made.
Commentator Note: It was during this match that I had already become annoyed with the constant referencing to Cena vs Ace, little did I know the long night I was in for and I’m not sure if the annoyance was they were ignoring the match going on or that I just didn’t want to be reminded of what was going to happen.

Tag Team Championship:

Lawler Note – I’ve touched on this subject in the past but dear Jeebus, lay off of Vickie, the fat jokes do not even make sense anymore. If you must make fun of her, aim at the face, that alone could give you material for years if you actually tried. But why even “bully” Vickie? It causes people to start feeling sorry for her and we all know that isn’t the desired outcome.
Is it me or has Swagger been brushing up on Ziggles’ The Art of Selling?
This has nothing to do with the match but I miss heel R-Truth, he was so much fun to watch a year ago.
Kofi had a great finishing spot in this and as much as people are always wanting him for a bigger singles push, I think he has always been a great tag team wrestler for this reason especially.
Pretty good tag match taking place, too bad its going to be most known for Vickie obsession and Cole making comments about Swags’ hair.

Divas Championship Match
Actual decent match with a solid duration for once. I actually don’t have much to complain about this time seeing as how both women have some pretty good in-ring moves (minus Layla’s double bounce crossbody in the corner, I really hate that) and could at least run the ropes (lookin at you K2).

Fatal 4-Way WHC Match
This match was pleasant surprise that really shouldn’t have been a surprise but sometimes I forget just how good these matches can be sometimes.
The White Noise move Sheamus is pushing is pretty terrible (minus the name, the name is spot-on for a finisher). I don’t know exactly what it it and maybe some of you could actually explain it to me but there’s just nothing about it that impresses me and it just looks awkward for everyone.

Dance-off/Squash Match
Seriously, is Miz still in the doghouse for not catching R-Truth or did he run over somebody’s poodle?
As much as I love me some Brodus Clay, I don’t know what to say about Miz anymore.
Not even gonna talking about the commentating during this, it’s just not worth it (although, I will say that Cole’s jiggle comment actually made me chuckle a little so…you know…hooray for that).

IC Match:
Cody Rhodes just adding to the NC-bashing that’s taken place the past few weeks and don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to try to defend this state.
There is a bit of speculation that Cody might be taking some time off and that’s why he dropped the belt but I remain hopeful we do get a decent Christian/Cody Rhodes run during part of the summer.
Really enjoyed this match and there’s a lot of complaints that Christian holding the IC title is a demotion for him from the top card belts but I see this as more of a promotion for the IC title. I mean, they want to throw around the word “legitimacy” all day so I guess that applies to the current state of the IC title.

WWE Title:
Like I said earlier, I know I won’t be the only one singing the praises of this match so I will keep this short just so my audience won’t have to hear the same stuff.
If this feud doesn’t lead to a submission match, I’m gonna be pissed and this is saying a lot because I hate submission matches (because the majority of them are featuring wrestling who only have 1 submission move in their arsenal)
My favorite spot was the surfboard leading into the dragon sleeper and Punk looked like he was about to snap in half.
The ending was perfect on several levels, the most important of which is the fact that it sets up a rivalry that will continue past this ppv and another being that it was a strong finish for both men and nobody lost any sense of momentum.

Another Squash Match
Lawler Note- Yes, Lillian Garcia messed up by saying Hunico instead of Camacho but that didn’t warrant the “they all look alike and we can’t understand what they’re saying” comment. Seriously, what the crap.
The Goldberg chants for Ryback are unfortunate because I really like him in the ring, although I do hate his music and the name, but it seems like most crowds just can’t get behind him for some reason and I’m not really getting the reason behind that. What am I missing that all the other fans aren’t?

Cena Vs Ace
This match was basically 95% comedy sketch that would have been horrible for an episode of Raw but it was used in a ppv. It was so bad that Cole couldn’t even stay in character to throw his own jokes in there (and I actually laughed).
Big Show ending it was a twist we saw a week ago and this is of the things I don’t understand about WWE. Creative/Vince/HHH/Steph are so hell-bent on throwing curves and surprises that they’re going to happen more often than not. The thing is, a lot of times, we guess the surprise before it happens and they get pissed about it and so for us not to get the last laugh, they cancel the curve and we get nothing (all the times we’ve been expecting Kharma to return). However, a situation like this, where everyone knew Big Show was going to interrupt and save Ace, they decided this was just tooooooo good to cancel? Of all the times I’ve ever wanted WWE to cancel a surprise ending, this was it.

As for Raw the next night, the only thing of real importance is that they confirmed that Punk and Bryan will continue (and throwing in more AJ) and all of that just makes me warm and fuzzy.

Also on Raw, Lawler made yet another dumb comment about Jinder Mahal’s headdress being some sort of rat tail or some reference I didn’t get. I’ve pointed out several of the dumb things he’s said recently and I’ve reach my boiling point with him on commentary. How does he get away with saying such idiotic things without any kind of backlash? In an age of this company where they make Cena, Punk and Cole apologize when their comments go a little too far either on the show or on twitter. I just think Lawler is stuck in 1999 and is trying to pull off the same junk he had back then and it just isn’t working anymore. Do they need a guy to oogle at the Divas? Replace him with Booker, he has enough duck shucking to fill your quota without being racist. And yes, I know we live in a cynical world (I’m a huge cynical person myself) and I know there’s someone reading this wanting to say, “so what? Why are you making such a big deal about it? It’s nothing new for him.” The point I’m trying to make is that I’m completely done with him because he’s crossed a certain threshold with me and I’m done trying to make excuses for him to my non/occasional wrestling fan friends…I can’t defend him anymore.

Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do twice,
Chris
