THE RAGER! – The Chris Jericho Kerfuffle and WWE Video Games

Columns, Top Story

Rage can do weird things to person, that much is obvious. So what about kayfabe rage? Since it’s essentially “acting rage” wouldn’t that do even weirder things to people or since its fake rage then wouldn’t that mean it would be easier to control?

I ask these things because I really have no idea, seeing as how I’m not an actor of any kind but a simple writer and all the rage that comes along with that territory is 100% real. In the world of Chris Jericho, the line between the two seems even less distinguishable.

Last week, I was a touch late on hearing the news about “the Brazil incident” But if you’re residing under the proverbial rock and don’t know at all what I’m talking about, basically Jericho is having a match against Punk and somehow a Brazilian flag finds its way in front of Jericho. Jericho, being the showman that he is known for, picks up the flag in a grand gesture and then crumples the flag, throws it to the mat and kicks it out of the ring

What follows is that local authorities interrupt the show and Jericho gets word that what he just did is very much illegal. The authorities says that he has two options, he could either be put in jail or he could publicly apologize right there. He chose to apologize and that was that.

And then WWE suspends him for 30 days (initially said to be indefinitely) and putting to a halt the upcoming program with Randy Orton that was planned (seems like Orton has the touch of death lately but that’s another story). Jericho has apologized on twitter as well and has started counting down the days of his suspension (which began immediately and was flown stateside the next day) and that alone alludes to that he won’t just call it quits for now and focus back on Fozzy.

So let us now do as we Rageans do best and speculate the decision by WWE to suspend him.
The first argument that hit me was that it was too much. Jericho had complied with the authorities and I’m sure nobody in the company was aware of that law, not that they could have anticipating this happening. I initially thought it was a severe over-reaction by WWE. However, then once I looked at the big picture, I knew exactly what they were doing. First of all, Jericho had to be the example for future international shows of what line you really have no business crossing, no matter how big of a jerk your character is. Secondly, I’m pretty sure WWE would enjoy the pleasure of going back to Brazil in the future and WWE wanted to look like they too were in compliance with the country’s laws and not sever any ties.

And then, of course, there’s a lot of speculation as to what will happen to Jericho’s run in WWE. We all know the Fozzy tour is looming and, from what I’ve been told of the schedule, we will have about a two month window after the suspension. A lot of people are saying that this is it, he’s leaving and won’t come back until after he finishes the tour. Then again, like I stated earlier, that Jericho is counting down the days of the suspension on twitter, alluding to that he will be returning.
Some have made the case that this ruins all momentum he had going and if he does come back, it will be a weak return. To those people, I can only say this: HAVE YOU NO IDEA WHO CHRIS JERICHO IS? As soon as the lights go out and his music hits, he will get a reaction from every one of you. And knowing him, he will use this suspension in a brilliant two-month long program with somebody (really doesn’t matter who) and he will make his exit (probably in a stretcher or purposely getting boo’d out the arena).
So basically this entire thing has been a big arduous explanation to say “stop worrying, you’ll get your Jericho fix.”

You call that a “revolution?”
So we found out this big revolution was just a big viral campaign for WWE’13, which looks suspiciously like WWE’12. I know I’m not one to judge people for buying yearly game titles (Madden junkie since 02) but at least in those games, the graphics gradually get better and then dramatically better when made for a newer console. What’s the problem with their games? Solely THQ. The graphics are good enough for PS One-type consoles. I would really love WWE to dump their relationship with THQ and enlist the servies of EA Games. The only problem with that is WWE’s lack of financial commitment to a decent video game product because they know all they have to do is make it look decent enough so that kids will bug their parents to buy it for them every year. So, good job on that, I guess.

Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do twice,
Chris

The Answer: An episode of Raw centered around Big Show is like an episode of Family Guy about Meg
