October 2012, a month after DC Comics’ zero month New 52 anniversary, plunges all the Green Lantern family titles head first into the Third Army. Green Lantern, with a missing Hal Jordan AND Sinestro seemingly replaced by an Islamic Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps with Guy Gardner and John Stewart, Green Lantern: New Guardians with Kyle Rayner, and the Red Lanterns all get tangled up in this.
The Third Army has been teased for some time with the Guardians of the Galaxy looking to replace the Green Lantern Corps, but also having learned from their Manhunters mistake, think the Third Army is the answer. Previously we learned that the Third Army would be lead by DC’s first Green Lantern, likely Rori Dag. Something called the Chamber of Shadows also comes into play leading into this arc as was revealed to Sinestro months ago.
From today’s news, it looks like the Third Army is made up of an army of clones with Green Lantern batteries for brains. Hmmm.
DC Comics Chief Creative Officer and Green Lantern anchor book writer Geoff Johns described the Rise of the Third Army October arc as follows:
- “Absolute power corrupts absolutely–and the Guardians time is finally here. The Lantern titles spent the first year of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 re-establishing themselves, but it all comes back together with year 2 starting with GREEN LANTERN #0 and leading into October’s #13’s – which share an amazing cover by Ivan Reis. In October, the Guardians’ Third Army rises to replace the Green Lantern Corps – but how is horrifying and why will change the Guardians and their ancient mission forever. As we discover what the Third Army actually means, our strongest Lanterns are targeted for absolute destruction. From Atrocitus to Guy Gardner to our newest Green Lantern from Earth – who may have been wrongly chosen – all their darkest secrets and failures will come to light. What is Sinestro’s ultimate fate? Who is this new Green Lantern and why was he chosen? What is the Third Army? What with Atrocitus sacrifice to take on the Guardians? What will Larfleeze give up to find the one thing he wants? What happens to Guy Gardner when he’s targeted after Hal Jordan? And, most importantly, who is the First Lantern?”
So, the Islamic Green Lantern may have been selected by mistake? Perhaps his gun plays into that? Seems like an odd weapon for a GL. And, just where are Hal Jordan and Sinestro?
Green Lantern Corps writer Peter J. Tomasi, Green Lantern: New Guardians scribe Tony Bedard, and Red Lanterns writer Peter Milligan also are excited about the arc and their comments can be found on the DC Comics Source blog.
