Marvel Comics Cancels Nine Avengers & X-Men Titles For Marvel Now? Plus One Avengers Book A Maybe?

News, Top Story

Marvel Comics’ solicitations for October 2012 are now out. It looks like Marvel may be clearing the deck for Marvel NOW… or something else since EIC Axel Alonso had indicated that while storylines were ending, no books are being distinctly cancelled for new #1’s for the Marvel NOW initiative. That said, I do welcome the right-sizing of the Marvel line.

In October the following titles get “Final Issue Variants”:

Captain America #19
Incredible Hulk #15
Invincible Iron Man #527
The Mighty Thor #22
Fantastic Four #611
FF #23
Uncanny X-Men #20
X-Men Legacy #275

The words “final issue” do not adorn the solicit for all of the books, but each have a final issue variant available. The series that have “final issue” in the solicit are: Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, FF and X-Men Legacy.

However, New Mutants #50 is also cancelled, but with no Final Issue Variant solicited.

The remaining titles above only have the words “final issue” affiliated with the final issue variant, but it looks like they are ending nonetheless. This be some trickery in the solicit, but we’ll see if there is a different between “final issues” and “end of an era”. And some books have both phrases! ;)

Also, Avengers Assemble #8 indicates that it is “Bagley and Bendis’ Final Issue!” That ending language focuses on the creative team. This will likely continue under a new creative team since the roster reflects the mega successful movie roster.

While it is likely that we’ll get new #1’s for characters featured on the Marvel Now teaser, there are also likely #1’s coming for at least one Fantastic Four book and one X-Men book too.

Fun times ahead.
