This November, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring the much-heralded Lawrence of Arabia to Blu-ray. Considered by director Steven Spielberg to be his all-time favorite, David Lean’s epic drama focuses on the military career of T.E. Lawrence (Peter O’Toole), a lieutenant in the British Army who makes a profound impact on the Arab nations during World War I.
Lawrence of Arabia is one of the most acclaimed motion pictures ever made, winning seven Oscars at the 1963 Academy Awards Ceremony. They include:
- Best Picture: Sam Spiegel
- Best Director: David Lean
- Best Art Direction: John Box, John Stoll, and Dario Simoni
- Best Cinematography: Frederick A. Young
- Best Sound: John Cox
- Best Film Editing: Anne V. Coates
- Best Original Score: Maurice Jarre
In addition, the picture received nominations for Best Actor (O’Toole), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Omar Sharif).
Official specs for the 50th anniversary release are unknown, but what we do know that the Blu-ray will offer the film in a 4K digital restoration. According to Sony’s official press release, “the original camera negative was scanned at 8K and the film went through a painstaking process of repairing problems inherent to the fifty-year old film elements.”
Sony Pictures is packaging Lawrence of Arabia in a three-disc, 50th Anniversary box set that also includes a soundtrack sampler CD and a collectible booklet.
Lawrence of Arabia will hit store shelves on November 13th. MSRP is listed at $95.99, but you can save 30% by pre-ordering your copy by clicking on the link below.
