Disc Announcements, News

Peter Gunn made being a private eye extremely cool back in the ’50s. Gunn hung out at Mothers and had a smokin’ theme song. Rediscovering the show over the past few decades has been a bit of a hassle. Even now catching an episode on ME-TV means staying up until the middle of the night. For those with a bedtime and a fear of DVRs, Peter Gunn: The Complete Series will be a relief to bleary eyes. All 114 episodes and a CD of Henry Mancini’s soundtrack are coming out on October 23. Here’s the press release from Timeless Media Group:

One of televisions most iconic characters, Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) is a handsome, suave detective tough enough to take on the hardest of hard cases, but with a soft touch when it comes to the ladies. On October 23, Timeless Media Group, a division of Shout! Factory, will release the complete series of this beloved show on DVD for the first time. A must-have for fans of detective series and classic television alike, this 12-DVD collection boasts all 114 original episodes, as well as a bonus CD of Henry Mancini’s Grammy and Emmy-Award winning score.

From his unofficial office at the smoke-filled jazz club ‘Mother’s’, Gunn keeps an eye on the colorful cast of patrons, including his gorgeous girlfriend Edie Hart (Lola Albright) the featured singer at Mother’s who later becomes proprietor of her own nightclub, ‘Edie’s’, and the club regulars, which include musicians, pool hustlers, artists and a sculptor. Despite his standard fee of $1,000.00, Gunn’s reputation keeps the customers lined up for his services, sometimes referred by Mother (Hope Emerson, season one; Minerva Urecal, seasons two and three), or his police buddy Lt. Jacoby (Herschel Bernardi).

Created by Blake Edwards, Peter Gunn also features an impressive list of classic TV guest stars including Phyllis Avery, James Coburn, Jackie Coogan, Wesley Lau, Ross Martin, Hal Smith, Barbara Stuart, Billy Barty and renowned jazz pianist Bill Chadney. The Emmy-nominated series ran on NBC from 1958-1961.
