Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, but a few actors who worked on the film won’t be seen in the final product. Deadline is confirming that performances by Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen and Amanda Peet were all left on the cutting room floor.
An unnamed source familiar with the production remarked that the excisions is “just the way Terry works; it’s not a reflection on anything other than the story.”
Malick has a reputation for shooting reams and reams of film then going through the painstaking process of forming his vision in the editing room. The actors and actresses listed above had but small, supporting roles as compared to the main stars played by Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko and Javier Bardem.
As to whether or not we’ll ever see those performances in a longer cut, there’s always a possibility. Though there had also been talk of a much longer cut of The Tree of Life and we’ve yet to see its arrival on home video.
