Ryan Gosling, arguably one of the best young stars in Hollywood currently, having been Oscar-nominated (Half Nelson) and star of such films as Drive and Lars and the Real Girl, is about to make the transition to the director’s chair.
Christina Hendricks, starlet on AMC’s Mad Men and Gosling’s co-star in Drive, will have the lead role, and principal photography is slated to begin next spring.
Marc Platt who produced Drive acknowledged that he is “thrilled to be producing Ryan Gosling’s debut as a writer & director…[Gosling] has composed a beautifully haunting script and has a very clear vision of how he will bring it to life. His ability to draw audiences into his world as an actor will serve him well as a filmmaker.”
The film, titled How to Catch a Monster, will weave elements of fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town.
Gosling will next be seen in Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
