Dexter – Episode 7-2 Review – “She Tried To Make Him Go To Rehab…”

Reviews, Top Story

As discussed last week, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling rather skeptical about this season of Dexter after the disastrous last season. (And a lackluster couple of seasons before that.) So far the episodes have been strong, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Right now, I find myself completely invested in one storyline and relatively bored by the other. I keep waiting to care about the strippers and the murder of that cop, but I don’t. The cop who was killed wasn’t a character we’d been given an opportunity to get to know, and watching Joey Quinn drool over fake boobs isn’t grabbing me. Right now it just feels like filler.

I’m still loving the Dexter and Deb stuff though, as well as LaGuerta’s personal investigation into the blood slide she found at the crime scene. It’s a great use of her character, because it poses a threat not only to Dexter, but to Deb as well.

Deb, after realizing that her brother is actually a serial killer, couldn’t arrest him and had to come up with another option. She’s trying to rehabilitate him by making him move into her murder beach house so she can watch him 24/7. The Miami Metro case this week played perfectly into this. An incarcerated serial killer was revealing where his victims were buried, suggesting that he’d developed a conscience while in prison. He hadn’t. After a couple of days out in the sub enjoying his favorite ice cream, he ran in front of a truck on the highway. He hadn’t been cured and he’d rather die than be in jail.

I love how the Dexter/Louis stuff is really ramping up, culminating in Dexter all but doing the video game geek in. He called Deb instead of killing Louis, but I don’t think his promise to Deb was the only reason he didn’t follow through. Murdering Louis wouldn’t have kept in line with Harry’s Code, and that’s still even more important to Dexter. Since Louis has shown that he isn’t afraid of Dexter, it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

With LaGuerta, Louis, Deb and the strippers, Dexter has several balls in the air right now. So far it’s working for the show. What did you guys think of last night’s episode?
