American Idol 2013 Premiere Review – Mimi vs. Minaj

Reviews, Shows

So, I rarely watch the early audition episodes of American Idol, but I make exceptions for new or guest judges. (I recall thinking that Katy Perry was very good at the gig when I watched her guest judge.) Since there’s been so much buzz about this new judging panel and the Mariah Carey/Nicki Minaj feud, I felt compelled to tune in for a while.

For those of you who care, but also live under a rock, the new judges are Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and, returning yet again, Randy Jackson. It’s an eclectic mix, to say the least.

I watched maybe forty minutes of the season premiere, caught a couple YouTube videos, and read this hilarious Buzzfeed recap. That’s pretty much all you need – my favorite moments were when the judges referenced Mean Girls, when Mariah kindly encouraged some poor, talentless schmuck that maybe he should try DJing instead, and Nicki Minaj’s face.

It’s mostly for the cameras, but it was still fun to watch Keith Urban feel incredibly uncomfortable sitting between them. It wasn’t enough to keep me interested in the auditions, but I’m moderately intrigued to see how this dynamic will play out in the live episodes. And I’ll probably tune back in when we get to the point where Nicki threatens to have Mariah killed, or whatever.

Did you guys watch? What’d you think?
