CB’s Slant: How WWE Used Captain Obvious to Book / Telegraph the 2013 Royal Rumble

Columns, Top Story

So let me get this straight: John Cena cuts that (universally seen as) awful promo to close last week’s Raw and is the only WWE superstar featured in that equally horrible Royal Rumble commercial that looked like it was filmed at a Chili’s restaurant in (insert suburban town here) … and then, well, Cena wins the 2013 Royal Rumble.

Now listen, I completely understand that WWE has resorted to booking things extremely safe in this era of (virtually) no competition, but this took spoon-feeding the audience to a whole new level. And yes, while John Cena winning the Royal Rumble isn’t surprising, are you telling me that those 60 to 70 minutes that we witnessed amounted to a PPV-worthy — a Royal Rumble spectacle-worthy — presentation? I certainly don’t think so.

Of course, there were some cool spots: Kofi with the chair, Bryan and Kane (though Kane should have gone through with saving him to show he’s the “better” friend), and I absolutely LOVED the entire Goldust-Cody Rhodes portion of the match.

But outside of those three things, this was one of the most lackluster, poorly constructed and obvious Royal Rumble matches in history.

Alas, the Road to WrestleMania is here, and it’s officially sign-pointing season for The Rock and John Cena.

And, well, with Captain Obvious in charge of booking these things, it looks like we will be getting more and more — and more — of the same…

…so get those spoons ready.

That’s all from me — CB.
