According to The Wrestling Observer, The Rock and CM Punk were rehearsing the finish to their match at Royal Rumble earlier on the afternoon Sunday and the finish was kept top-secret from the rest of the locker room; so much so that WWE put a curtain around the ring so that any other employees or independent workers could not see what The Rock and Punk were working on.
While there has been some backlash from fans criticizing The Rock pinning Punk after hitting the weak looking The People’s Elbow, the idea behind it is that Punk “doesn’t care about the people” so he was beaten with that finisher and therefore the “people”.
The Rock is expected to give the WWE Title a ton of promotion in the weeks ahead as he will be making the rounds doing media interviews to promote his upcoming films and WrestleMania while being the WWE Champion.
