Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter Campaign Passes $2 Million, Summer Shoot Greenlit

News, Projects, Top Story

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas didn’t need an entire month to reach his Kickstarter goal of $2 million to move forward with a feature film about the spunky private eye. He got the required funds from fans in just 10 hours time.

Not only did it shatter Kickstarter records, first passing the $1 million milestone in 4 hours 24 minutes, the campaign showed how great a power cult fandom can be. The Warner Bros. television property aired on UPN-CW for three years before it was finally given the boot from television airways. The series starred Kristen Bell as the title character, playing a student who progresses from high school to college while moonlighting as a private investigator under the tutelage of her detective father.

After its cancellation series creator Rob Thomas had been contemplating ways to continue the adventures of the female private investigator. One of the ideas was novelizations or graphic novels featuring the detective heroine. The film idea was proposed, but the idea was tenuous at best, a pipe dream. Then you read something like this after 10 hours of donations.

According to Thomas, Warner Bros gave its blessing if he could secure at least $2 million through crowdsourcing. Though, I don’t think even the suits at Warner Bros knew how fast Thomas and Bell could acquire the funding, if they could at all. Pledge prizes listed on the Veronica Mars Kickstarter ranged from a PDF of the shooting script for $10 to a speaking role in the film — which was snagged within the first hour of the campaign for $10,000. Donation levels also include a personalized video message from Bell, a digital copy of the finished film via Flixster, a private hometown screening, set visits during filming, and the chance to name a character in the film.

Here’s the video clip on the The Veronica Mars Movie Project Kickstarter with Kristen Bell urging fans to donate. As of this writing, the Kickstarter has raised $2.1 million thanks to the donations of 34k individuals. There is still 30 days remaining on the Kickstarter.
