Robert Guerrero Arrested in New York this Morning

News, Top Story

According to the New York Daily News, boxer Robert Guerrero was arrested this morning for gun possession at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, New York (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/boxer-robert-guerrero-arrested-gun-rap-article-1.1301134).  Details of the arrest are not available at this time.

Guerrero is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather on May 4, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in one of the biggest boxing events of the year.  Indeed, it appears Guerrero was in New York to do publicity for the fight and was on his way back to training camp in Las Vegas when the arrest occurred.

It is unknown how the arrest will affect the planned fight.  Many boxers, including Mayweather himself, have gone through with fights while charges were pending against him.  The Nevada commission will likely not make an issue of this but public pressure could change that given the intense gun control debate that is ongoing in the United States.

It will also be interesting to see if the arrest is covered on Showtime’s behind-the-scenes reality show “All Access.”  That show is supposed to follow the fighters lives as they approach the big pay-per-view showdown.  Even if they do not show film of Guerrero’s arrest, you can be sure that Mayweather will bring it up to get under his opponent’s skin or to help promote the fight.
