10 Thoughts On Community… Season 5 Episode 2 “Introduction to Teaching”

10 Thoughts

After a successful season 5 premiere, Community heads into the second episode of the fifth season centered around Jeff’s foray into teaching.

1. The episode opens up with Jeff as a teacher, but it’s a whole new world for him. He insults Leonard much like in the premiere, but others comment that’s not how a teacher should act.

2. Jeff escapes to the break room, where he runs into another teacher. That teacher has been at the school 15 years and laughs at Jeff’s suggestion the job was a stepping stool to a real job.

3. The Dean comes in and stops all discussion by humming the graduation theme for what seemed like forever. He put a cap on Jeff as everyone else stared in stunned silence.

4. Abed is taking a class called Nicholas Cage: Good or Bad? THe teacher refers to another teacher that Abed drove mad by answering the question – Who’s The Boss? Abed quickly says “Angela”. The teacher assigns everyone to watch 5 Cage movies “No marathons, space out your viewings.”

5. The Dean approaches the faculty lounge but doesn’t enter the room. They close the door in his face and it’s revealed that management can’t enter the lounge.

6. Buzz Hickey advises Jeff to give an Annie an A- so she’ll drop his class. He then admits the minuses are not real and just used to slight students that are not well liked. This revelation, which Jeff tells the study group, leads to a huge revolt on campus. “Minuses are made up! It’s riot time. Pop pop!”

7. The Nicholas Cage stuff is driving Abed crazier than normal. Yarn in room. Enters classroom. He then goes into a bizarre Nicholas Cage impression that the closed captioning describes as “yelling like Nicholas Cage”

8. Abed is a broken man after his Nicholas Cage meltdown. Shirley comes to find him, and restores his faith in humanity by referencing Hellraiser unsolicited. It was pretty awesome.

9. The Dean suggests that Jeff start a student-teacher group, which leads Jeff to enlist Buzz and then ban the Dean from the group, essentially creating a new study group.

10. The end shows the group eating lunch, where Buzz is squirting some sort of food tube, testing ‘rations for the shelter he’s building”. Troy asks him if he is the coolest person alive. The Dean looks on longingly from outside, with a strange French tune and English subtitles. Hilarious and wacky end to a great episode.
