Demythify: Peter Parker’s Return & Doctor Octopus’ Exit Begins In Superior Spider-Man #25?! Plus Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 Variant Covers! (Spoilers’ish)

Columns, News, Top Story

Welcome to our weekly Demythify column which today adds a little more information to the big comic book news that broke over the weekend. Spoilers‘ish information follow.

.

Following up on the leak of April 2014’s Marvel Previews edition, that would include Marvel’s April 2014 solicitations, which had a new Amazing Spider-Man #1 seemingly with Peter Parker back in charge, Superior Spider-Man writer Dan Slott has now confirmed that story in a big way.

The New York Daily News spoke with Slott and Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso on April 2014’s return of Peter Parker, in charge of his own body, in Amazing Spider-Man #1 as part of the All-New Marvel Now Publishing initiative.

Back in December 2012, it was noted that Peter and Amazing Spider-Man would likely be back in time for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 film. I didn’t realize it would so on-the-nose during the same month that the Amazing Spider-Man 2 film starts debuting around the world.

Writer Dan Slott had some fun with that “fact” in the New York Daily News.

“([Peter} Parker’s coming back) just in time, fancy that, for a major Spider-Man motion picture. It seems uncanny. It was very nice for Sony to schedule the movie around the story.”

Funny quips aside, Slott did have some illumination for fans:

“… We’ve gone over 30 issues without Peter Parker, so when we let him out of that box and he gets to put on that costume again and he gets to swing through the sky, it’s going to be the greatest feeling.”

    “But there’s a twist. There’s always a twist.”

A twist? I wonder if Doctor Octopus will remain in Peter Parker’s head going forward a la DC Comics’ Firestorm?

In addition to the Humberto Ramos cover to April 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 that adorned the Marvel Previews #3 cover, Marvel also released a few of the variant covers to that issue; one by Jerome Opena (below left) and Marcos Martin (below right).

Superior Spider-Man, the series that replaced Amazing Spider-Man after its climactic issue #700 (spoilers here) with Doctor Octopus in control of Peter Parker’s body, appears to start the journey to its end with Superior Spider-Man #25 shipping this week and marking the end of the “Darkest Hours” current story arc.

That would appear to be what Dan Slott alluded to in a recent Facebook (dan.slott.3) post to fans yesterday:
