As if it wasn’t already abundantly clear, Meryl Streep is the “Actresses of Actresses.” Having recently received yet another Oscar nomination – this time as Best Actress for August: Osage County – she’s already contemplating her next feature.
Deadline reports that Streep has inked a deal with The Weinstein Co. to star in The Senator’s Wife. She will be joined by other reputable actors, so says mogul Harvel Weinstein, in a film he’s describing as “the new Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” — you know, the beloved Frank Capra film that starred Jimmy Stewart about one man’s fight against corrupt politicians in Washington.
Instead of corrupt politicians, however, the enemy will be the National Rifle Association. This political drama will be an expose account of the NRA’s behind-the-scenes machinations of legislation that would have expanded background checks of gun sales.
With school shootings becoming almost epidemic in nature, and the NRA’s tactics to get a bill silenced, look for conservative news to be up in arms (no pun intended) with Harvey Weinstein’s latest fight, cinematically speaking.
