Last night, I said what I felt like I needed to say about Daniel Bryan being excluded from the 2014 30-man Royal Rumble match. Bryan was clearly the man who should have won it all, but instead we are now faced with another retread feud that no one cares to see on the Road to WrestleMania XXX: Randy Orton vs. Batista.
With all of that said, WWE STILL could have salvaged the night — at least a little bit — if only they had the guts to call an audible at the end of the night. That’s right, WWE could have changed course and let Roman Reigns REALLY become the breakout star of the show by having him eliminate Batista to win the Rumble.
This would have served two purposes: 1. it would have made Reigns an unpredictable yet still feasible winner; and 2. it would have created a much fresher co-main event match at WrestleMania XXX, regardless of who the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is come April.
Also, Reigns winning the whole thing would have made the Daniel Bryan exclusion at least a little bit easier to swallow, and THAT PITTSBURGH CROWD would have at least had SOMETHING to hang their hats on.
One last thing: I never thought I’d see Rey Mysterio mercilessly forced into the role of the villain. Yet when Mysterio’s music hit and he came down to the ring as the 30th entrant into the 2014 Royal Rumble, it was absolutely insane to see the crowd turn on such a beloved figure just for not being THE BELOVED FIGURE at this point in time.
Thanks for taking one for the team, Rey-Rey, I hope you understand that those boos were simply what’s “best for business” when you are a disenchanted WWE fan who has been disappointed too many times to count during this whole Daniel Bryan saga.
That’s all from me — CB.
