It can be argued that the summer blockbuster season is too frontloaded this May with the quality and type of tentpole titles being released. If including April 4th’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the precursor to summer, then we’ll have three films inspired by/based on comic book characters coming out in the span of two months.
Yet this May the most intriguing may very well be Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Singer, who left the X-Men franchise to pursue DC Comics’ famed Superman in Superman Returns, has come back to the Marvel camp after Matthew Vaughn delivered a stellar reboot in the form of X-Men: First Class in 2011.
The previous trailer to X-Men: DoFP made good use of Hans Zimmer’s “Journey to the Line” (as featured in Terence Mallick’s The Thin Red Line and sampled in various trailers, particularly Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor). This final trailer may not use the Zimmer composition but it is a stunning trailer.
The film will incorporate characters from both the original X-Men trilogy and First Class because of a time-travel storyline. It truly looks amazing.
The sequel features cast members from the original X-Men franchise like Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, and Shawn Ashmore along with X-Men: First Class cast members like James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Michael Fassbender.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will open theatrically on May 23rd, 2014.
