Preliminary card (Fox Sports 1)

Danny Castillo vs. Charlie Brenneman

Round 1: Castillo looking to get inside quickly, throwing leg kicks and faking level changes early. Brenneman’s in on a single and we’re against the cage, he goes for back and Castillo gets tripped down. In side control and working some ground and pound, some nice knees to the body. Moves to mount and grabs an armbar, Castillo out and moves to back. Brenneman back to his feet and Castillo lands some knees to Brenneman’s legs. Castillo goes for the mat return, can’t finish, Brenneman reverses and we’re back standing. Brenneman in on a single and Castillo defends well, 90 seconds left and we’re standing. Not a lot of action as both guys are throwing one strike, nothing in combination and nothing as a setup. Brenneman in on a single at the minute mark and gets it, Castillo in butterfly guard. Back grab and both hooks in against the cage with 30 seconds left. Brenneman is falling off and Castillo throws him from back. ONe hook with 10 seconds left, rear naked choke and he can’t finish as the round ends. 10-9 Brenneman

Wouldn’t be surprised if someone gave the round to Castillo based on the finish. If this goes the distance it could come into play.

Round 2: Castillo lamps him with a right 20 seconds into the round and Brenneman’s OUT.

Danny Castillo wins via knockout (punch) at :23 of the second round

Jessamyn Duke vs. Bethe Correia

Round 1: Duke comes out pumping her jab because she’s got a ten inch reach advantage. The Brazilian is looking for the counter and starts out looking to figure out distance. Not a ton of action as we’re in an extended feel out process right now; Correia has slowed Duke down with some leg kicks and is looking to explode inside. Duke is doing a good job at using her distance to make Correia pick her spots. Duke in for the clinch but can’t complete it. Correia wants this standing and fights like her teammates, the Freire brothers (Patricky and Patricio, Bellator fighters). It’s kind of odd to see a woman with the same sort of movements as them. Duke is looking to grab that Thai Plum as soon as Correia gets inside but Correia is darting out as soon as she feels that second hand come around her head. She’s doing more damage, striking wise, as Duke is looking for something big and Correia is looking to land more shots. Duke nearly gets a takedown but Correia blocks with the whizzer and keeps it standing. Correia is slipping a lot of punches and making Duke pay with strikes. Duke doesn’t look in the same league, striking wise, as Correia looks so much better on a technical basis. 10-9 Correia

Round 2: Duke is starting to fight a little taller but she’s eating some big time punishment. Correia has found her distance and is making her pay. She’s bleeding and Duke goes for the takedown, reverse and Correia has Duke pinned against the cage a minute in. Duke gets a takedown and nearly grabs a guillotine, nearly pulls off a Peruvian necktie and Correia winds up in side control on top. Some ground and pound and Duke is trying to sweep her way out. Correia is using excellent top control to keep her down. Duke gets to her knees and Correia grabs back, Duke with a hip toss down and guillotine try but can’t keep her down. Back standing and Duke is working that jab again. Correia is landing more on the counter, though. Duke is trying to fight tall but Correia is doing a great job at adjusting to the height disadvantage. 10-9 Correia, 20-18

Round 3: More of the same to start as Correia has got her timing and the distance down. Duke’s head is staying still, as well, so she’s open to getting lit up by Correia right now. Correia’s hands are electric right now. Duke is just eating punishment as Correia is making her pay by sticking and moving. Duke is trying to fight tall but Correia is hitting her because her head movement is terrible. She’s standing straight and keeping her head in perfect position to get punched. Correia is teeing off and Duke pulls off a takedown and nearly grabs an armbar, goes for a guillotine and can’t complete it. Duke is working into mission control off her back, working for a meat hook to get into a triangle. She doesn’t have it complete and Correia works out of it. And we get a ridiculous stand up with 30 seconds left. More of the same standing as Correia outlands her some more. Correia 10-9, 30-27

Official decision: Bethe Correia def. Jessamyn Duke via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

Takanori Gomi vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg

Round 1: Gomi comes out low, looking to throw a big shot. VF looking to get in close and get the takedown. We’re against the cage and Gomi manages to shuck him off and get some space. VF with some kicks and Gomi lands a big left that wobbles him. Gomi is setting up for that home run shot and VF is set up to duck and slip. VF wants that clinch, and to avoid the big power, and Gomi doing good to avoid. He looks tired as VF with some punches, Gomi looks almost out of it halfway through the round. He’s looking to throw bombs now as Gomi’s fatigue is making him wobbly. SLip from VF and Gomi steps into half guard. VF to his knees and Gomi has hooks in on his back, looking for that RNC. 80 seconds left in the round and Gomi is working. slowly but surely, for it. He fights out and we’re back standing. Firefight between the two with 20 seconds left as both guys are lumbering like it’s a third round, not the end of the first. 10-9 Gomi

Round 2: Gomi out and he looks like he’s gassed. Normal for him, as always, but he’s throwing what he has into his punches. Quick break to take care of some tape … and IVF wobbled from a big punch. Gomi is sticking and moving as IVF is moving forward, Gomi looking to land something big. IVF is looking for the counter as Gomi’s power is a bit reduced because of his fatigue. This is starting to resemble some exhausted sloppy brawling as Gomi starts to pour on some big shots. IVF is wobbled from a liver shot but Gomi doesn’t have the firepower left to finish him at this point. Two minutes left and Gomi is looking for that one shot KO but doesn’t have enough behind it. IVF is eating a ton of shots as both guys are throwing right now. This is a sloppy, sloppy brawl right now. 10-9 Gomi, 20-18

Round 3: IVF coming out, pushing the pace, as Gomi is playing the counter game. He’s still winging shots, looking for the body, as both guys are throwing but don’t have enough power to finish at this point. IVF with a great body shot and Gomi goes down. He’s uncorking down and almost stopped. Gomi back up and we’re against the cage a minute into the fight. Crowd is down with Gomi right now as IVF is kneeing him to the legs and body right now. Gomi out and and we’re back to the middle. IVF is controlling the middle as Gomi is working the body. To the clinch at the halfway mark and we’re against the cage. Break and IVF eats a huge jab. Gomi is pressing the pace with some big shots. IVF has a helluva chin right now as Gomi is landing some huge shots. IVF’s face looks awful right now as he’s bleeding everywhere. He’s still fighting hard, though. We’re up against the cage now for the final minute. Gomi grabs back for a moment but IVF works his way back. IVF grabs and gets the takedown, IVF with some nice body work. Gomi reverses position and we’re done with the fight. 10-9 IVF, 29-28 Gomi

Official decision: Takanori Gomi defeats Isaac Vallie-Flagg via unanimous decision (29-28×3)

Joseph Benavidez vs. Tim Elliott

Round 1: Elliott comes out and grabs a takedown early. Benavidez butterflies his way back up. Elliott’s aggressiveness is putting Benavidez on his heels, something he’s not the best at fight out of. Elliott with the takedown and looks to grab back. Wild scramble and Elliott has the crucifix, Benavidez is trapped there and he nearly grabs a banana splits. Elliott on top and Benavidez is fighting off his back for the first time I can remember. Benavidez with some big shots but Elliott is wading through them. JB looks out of it for the first and and Elliott with a double leg to the ground. Benavidez with the roll and we’re back standing, Benavidez with a front headlock and Elliott gives up guard. He’s got the head wrapped but doesn’t have the guillotine, which is what he’s looking for. He’s going for it as Elliott is doing a good job fighting off his back, playing defense. Benavidez grabs mount and has it and Elliot TAPS. What a wild fight!

Official decision: Joseph Benavidez wins via submission (guillotine) at 4:07 of the first round

Pay Per View Card

Max Holloway vs. Andre Fili

Round 1: Fili gets tagged early on a counter a Fili is very aggressive coming out. Some nice leg kicks from Holloway as both are feeling each other out early. The opening minute plus has been about guys trying to find distance as Fili is trying to goad Holloway into a brawl. Holloway is staying technical and not taking the bait. Nice combination from Fili and a quick slip from Holloway, right back up. Fili is outlanding Holloway in quantity right now but Holloway’s strikes are much more pronounced. Three minutes in and both guys are engaging in jab/kick wars. Not a lot of power shots, lots of quantity low power stuff landing. Holloway has Fili’s timing down and Fili gets the takedown with 90 seconds left. Holloway back up and we’re against the cage. Holloway lands a nice shot to the body and Fili grabs the body in a clinch against the cage. Holloway 10-9

Round 2: Holloway tags Fili early and he’s hurt. Holloway is pouring it on right now as FIli goes to the clinch. Holloway with some beautiful knees to the head and he’s firing right now. Back to the middle of the cage and Holloway catches a kick, tripping Fili. He lets Fili back up and we’re back to the middle with 3 minutes in. Fili is trying to go for the takedown whenever Holloway lands something big and Holloway has figured it out. Fili gets the takedown with two minutes left. Terrible standup after a minute and we’re back to the center. Spin kick from Holloway is caught and Fili with a high crotch single, can’t finish wit 90 seconds left. Jim Miller vs. Yancy Medeiros

Round 1: Miller changed up his entrance music from “Bad Moon Rising” to “Long Cool Woman” by the Hollies. Kind of odd … but it sounds like a CCR type of song so it kind of makes sense. Medeiros looking to keep Miller away from him, using his length to keep it standing. Miller is measuring distance right now as Miller is looking to explode and get inside. Yancy is doing a great job using his kicks to keep Miller at arm’s length. Miller is trying to get inside but Medeiros is doing a great job at keeping away. Body shot from Miller and he’s hurt, Miller into the clinch and we’re up against the cage. Medeiros got nut-shotted, I think, based on his body language. Miller grabs a guillotine and pulls guard, he’s got it tight. Before he can tap out he goes out at 3:16 of the first round.

Jim Miller wins via technical submission (guillotine) at 3:16 of the first round

With that win Miller ties Chris Lytle for most submission attempts, all time, and Gleison Tibau for most wins at lightweight.

Luke Rockhold vs. Tim Boetsch

Round 1: Rockhold takes the center of the cage quickly as Boetsch is looking to explode into him. Boetsch with a takedown and brilliant counter, he grabs a triangle counter from top and grabs a hold of his ankle. Rockhold’s got that triangle deep as Boetsch is turtled up, eating some body shots. Rockhold is working for a kimura and Boetsch is in trouble. Boetsch is trying to roll out and can’t find a way out. Boetsch taps at 2:09 of the first round.

Luke Rockhold defeats Tim Boetsch via submission (kimura) at 2:09 of the first round

Phil Davis vs. Anthony Johnson

Round 1: It’s wild to see Rumble as big as he is right now … and to think he used to make 170 (or something resembling it) years ago. Davis is looking to set up a level change but he doesn’t want to kickbox with Johnson, either. He’s circling away from that right hand as well; it’s smart tactics. Davis is going for that takedown and can’t get it; Rumble is looking to load up that right and Davis is doing a good job at using his movement to stay away. He’s throwing in a lot of kicks to keep Johnson from planting and launching that right. Johnson is starting to throw uppercuts as soon as he gets inside for that takedown, as well, causing him to hesitate a little. Davis has a heck of a chin to take Rumble’s shots so far. Johnson lands some big shots as Davis is busted up and on the run. Rumble looks like a contender right now. Davis goes for a single and can’t finish as davis is bleeding a lot. Rumble looks good so far. Davis is starting to kickbox a little now, sticking and moving but as soon as Johnson tags him he’s moving backwards. Davis hasn’t been dominated like this since Rashad Evans did it in Chicago at UFC on Fox 2. Johnson 10-9

Round 2: Davis has to get him down because at this point Rumble’s power and strength is deciding this fight. Rumble is looking for that one punch KO at this point as he’s throwing hard and looping; he’s not having to worry about the takedowns because Davis isn’t feinting that way. Davis looks almost terrified of Rumble’s power whenever he gets close. Nice head kick from Rumble that Davis checks. Another takedown try and Rumble stuffs him like it’s nothing. Davis is getting tagged right now; Rumble looks like he wants to finish this soon. He’s throwing at 100%, wanting that one shot KO. He’s not throwing jabs or setups; full power and nothing but. Davis trying to find an angle but as soon as he gets close Johnson is hitting him hard. Davis is starting to throw some kicks to the body, if only to keep his hands close. Beautiful combination from Johnson as Davis gets in close and Johnson counters him beautifully. Johnson looks angry right now, like Davis should be knocked out, and is starting to fight a little angry. Davis with a single and Johnson shucks him off, sprawl and another takedown attack that goes nowhere. Davis is 0-5 so far in the takedown department and that won’t change as the round ends. 10-9 Johnson, 20-18

Round 3: Crowd is amped and Phil has to get the finish here. No way anyone gave him a round in 1 or 2. Rumble is starting to work the body more as Johnson looks like the fresher fighter. Davis is trying to get a takedown and Johnson isn’t going to let that happen anytime soon. Davis goes from zero to terrified anytime Johnson throws a hook; he springs straight back. Davis is starting to throw some head kicks and gets the clinch two minutes in and Johnson just casually shoves him back. Davis moved back like a sack of potatoes, too, as Johnson is ANGRY. He wants that knockout right now as he starts to turn up the pace now. This is the sort of fighter we thought Rumble would be at 170 years ago, crazy enough, and now he looks like a Top 5 205er right now. Davis has nothing for him as he’s trying to get inside for a takedown and/or survive to the judges. Davis with the takedown try that goes nowhere, Johnson nearly lamps him against the cage. Davis is in survival mode right now. He grabs a single with 80 seconds left and Johnson defending it well. He can’t get him down and Johnson just casually takes it to the center of the cage. Davis lands some body work but Johnson shoves him off. Davis doesn’t have the power to stand and can’t get him down. RUmble with a single and Davis with a kimura, not enough time to finish it. 10-9 Johnson, 30-27

Official decision: Anthony Johnson defeats Phil Davis via unanimous decision (30-27×3)

Jon Jones (c) vs. Glover Teixeira

Jones does the Ray Lewis sack before he comes out. The crowd LOVES him.

Round 1: Jones with a body kick early as as he’s trying to get in early for the clinch. Glover is landing some shots but Jones is working the body with his kicks in early. He’s in deep on a shot and against the cage, can’t get the takedown. He’s landing to the body and legs now, looking to take away some of Glover’s power. Glover catches the kick but can’t do anything, Jones ties him up looking to throw that spinning elbow off it. Glover won’t let him finish it. Gloves goes for the single and can’t finish and we’re back to the middle of the cage. Glover’s cardio looks on point so far as Jones lands a nice Brazilian kick. Quick stop for an eye poke. He’s ok and we’re back. Glover looking to throw some bombs but Jones is doing a great job with his movement. Jones is landing some nice kicks over the hands of Glover. Jones catches a kick and grabs a takedown, up quickly as Jones goes for a guillotine. THis fight reminds me of Rampage/Jones so far; Jones is working a long game. Glover is looking for a lead uppercut and isn’t landing; Jones is seeing it well before it gets near him. Spin kick to the body from Jones. He’s making Glover chase him like he did Rampage. Glover is trying to box him primarily at this point and Jones lands an axe kick as the round ends. Jones 10-9

Round 2: Glover out pressing the pace with his box, Jones in deep but can’t finish the double leg. He’s getting in deep on the double but isn’t quite finishing it because Glover is still fresh. He’s doing it to gauge Glover’s cardio, which is interesting. Jones is keeping his distance and landing straight punches and kicks. Glover is trying to counter with power shots at 100% and Glover is missing wildly. Jones is using his length masterfully. Lands a big elbow and Glover is hurt. Jones can’t finish and Glover’s been eye-poked again. Jones has been warned and next time it’s a point. Round 3: Glover comes out in a boxing stance again as Jones is keeping his distance, finding his pace and distance with his kicks. Jones is starting to use his right hand more, as he nearly exclusively used his left for the first two rounds. Glover is throwing combinations coming in but he’s not landing anything. Jone sis using his distance beautifully, landing nice elbows and kicks. 90 seconds into the round and Jones gets the double, Glover defends and we’re against the cage. Jones is using this time to knee the legs of Glover right now. Glover is trying to land uppercuts but isn’t landing flush. He hurts him with one but Jones recovers quickly. Jones is us starting to land elbows and knees more, going away from his punching game. Jones is working the short elbow game against the cage, landing some big shots. Glover should be winning this game right now as Jones is winning this short clinch striking game. Teixiera’s bleeding from those elbows now, as well. Nice left hook as he exits, as well. Jones finding his mark here at distance as Glover is working a boxing game in an MMA fight. If he could land more it would change but Jones is controlling the distance. Jones with a nice kick followed by a left hand; it’s where he’s winning this fight. Beautiful body work against the cage as Jones is starting to open up his offense on Glover right now. Jones 10-9, 30-27

Round 4: Glover comes out throwing kicks and starting to use his offense more. That cut has to be weighing on him right now. Jones is using distance, starting to use a boxing game more. He’s grabbing the clinch and pushing Glover against the cage to set up that elbow game. Misses that patented wild spinning elbow against the cage but follows it with a nice right hand. Right now Glover isn’t exploiting Jones’s retreat in straight lines, which is what gave Jones fits against Alexander Gustafsson. Glover’s mouthpiece comes out and we take a break. Back in and we’re back fighting. Jones wants back in that clinch as that’s where he’s winning when he’s not using his distance to keep Glover at distance. Jones is throwing elbows at that cut of Glover as that cut is bleeding once more. Jones is starting to land more uppercuts as Glover doesn’t have that punching power anymore. That body and leg work has paid off and we’re back against the cage. Big elbow and Jones is lighting him up against the cage. Glover is eating some huge elbows against the cage. Jones is lighting him up and gets a takedown and lands some shots as the round ends. Jones 10-9, Jones 40-36

Round 5: Glover has to get the finish and he knows it. Jones gets the early takedown and Glover is back up. Glover back up and Jones has him against the cage. Glover with some big shots but there’s not a lot of pop on them now. Jones starts throwing down and Glover gets his mouthpiece knocked out. Jones is owning him in this area. He’s now feinting on the takedown and Glover is saying “forget this” and throwing hands. Jones backs him against the cage and is battering him again.
