While he won’t be participating in UFC 178, Alexander Gustafsson will definitely be watching.
The light heavyweight contender was next in line for a shot at the belt after taking Jones to the limit in their UFC 165 showdown, and secured a dominant win over Jimi Manuwa, but was forced to pull out of a UFC 178 rematch with champion Jon Jones after suffering a torn meniscus during his camp. As a result, he was replaced on the card by Daniel Cormier.
“Thank you all for the support. I will be back stronger than ever and get MY belt. Jones, I see that you are happy, but if you get passed DC, your nightmare will be back and more motivated than ever,” Gustafsson wrote on Facebook.
In addition to his post, Gustafsson also included a video message to his fans.
“I got a knee injury. It’s not very serious, but I need to take care of it,” said Gustafsson. “It’s a small issue that has been with me. It’s not a long recovery time – just a few weeks.”
With that said, Gustafsson said he will watch the match to see who he will face off against when he recovers.
“I’m disappointed, I really wanted to fight at 178 but I can’t,” he said. “I will watch it, for sure. It’s a great card.”
