Sometimes the stars align and the MMA gods work together to make a superfight like Nick Diaz vs. Anderson Silva happen. On other occasions, some fights just aren’t meant to be.
Donald Cerrone (11-3) and Khabib Nurmagomedov (6-0) are in the latter category.
According to ‘Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone, he has signed to fight Nurmagomedov three times and each time, the fight was pulled by his opponent’s side. The most recent of these dates was going to be in a couple of months at UFC 178.
“This is the third time him and I have signed to fight and the third time that he’s pulled out,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie. “I’m kind of bummed. I was really looking forward to that fight. But hey, what are you going to do?”
While you would think that the fight hasn’t happened because Nurmagomedov is ducking his American counterpart, this isn’t the case. It has been because of a weird confluence of circumstances. At UFC 178, the “Eagle” suffered a knee injury 20 minutes have agreeing to the match.
“It’s bad luck,” Cerrone said. “(We were supposed to fight) earlier in the year. One was called off because of Ramadan or whatever he has to do for his religion. He didn’t want to take the fight because it would put him during that period. The time before that I don’t really remember the logistics of it. Now he’s injured.”
