Gotham Spoilers: Show To Take Place In ‘Mash-Up’ Time Period Of Timeless World, Show Casts Mob Boss Maroni

Spoilers

For fans wondering about what time period, FOX’s Gotham will take place in, there are more questions than answers.

The first episode features both flip phones and ’70s cars. The show’s EP, Bruno Heller describes it as a confluence of time.

“It’s a mash-up, to use the modern phrase,” Heller said. “This world is the past, but it’s everybody’s past. It’s a timeless world — it’s yesterday, today and tomorrow all at the same time. That’s the time that dreams live in.”

The show also has tapped Dexter’s David Zayas to play crime boss Salvatore Maroni (brilliant casting if you ask us!).

According to Batman lore, Maroni is one of the city’s most dangerous gangsters and one of the caped crusader’s first enemies. He is also the man responsible for disfiguring Harvey Dent and subsequently turning him into Two-Face. In The Dark Knight, Eric Roberts played the role.

In the season premiere, the gangster strives to gain more territory and battles with Falcone (John Doman) for control of Gotham.

Gotham premieres Monday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m.
