While Alexander Gustafsson Might Not Like It, Anthony Johnson Salivating At Inevitable Showdown

News, Top Story

While no one can argue against Alexander Gustafsson having a point about being screwed out of a light heavyweight title shot, it appears he is just going to have to move on.

While the #1 contender to Jon Jones’ light heavyweight title has gone on the record and said that he doesn’t like the idea of Daniel Cormier getting the first shot at Jones after the champion recovers from knee surgery, his criticisms appear to be falling on deaf ears. UFC president Dana White already hinted that Gustafsson would have to fight Anthony Johnson while he waits for Jones and now Johnson also says he is ready for the Swede.

“I’m down to fight whoever,” Johnson said to MMAJunkie Radio. “If they want to give me Alex, that’s fine. We’re all going to have to fight eventually, one day. It’s bound to happen, so why not?”

A win against Gustafsson would automatically catapult Johnson to the top of the contender board and would put him first in line at a shot at the champion. The prospect of getting into the Octagon with Gustafsson clearly was something that Johnson had already been thinking about and said that he would even be willing to go to Stockholm for the fight.

“I’ll hate it, but all right, I guess I’m going to Sweden to whip some ass,” he said.

Johnson met with UFC officials over the past few days and an announcement about his next opponent will likely happen at some point this week. That also suggests that the UFC would have to convince the jilted Gustafsson to take it.

“We haven’t talked main events yet – we just talked about potential opponents and people I’m for sure going to fight,” he said. “We’re just taking it one day at a time. I could (have an announcement soon). We’ll see what happens. I can’t say nothing. I don’t throw bones – I throw bombs.”
