UFC President Dana White has changed his tune about the UFC ranking system.
While White initially criticized the media for putting fighters in the UFC rankings, he now says that it is a system that works in terms of helping to determine who fights who.
“I like it,” White recently told MMAjunkie of the UFC rankings. “I wasn’t crazy about it in the beginning. I love it now.”
The UFC’s official rankings are posted on the organization’s websites and are compiled by 50 journalists from around the world who rank the top 15 fighters in the nine UFC divisions.
The ranking system was introduced in February 2013 and now appear on UFC broadcasts and FOX Sports studio shows.
White said that while the system still has some kicks to be worked out, they are aimed to appeal to casual UFC fans.
“(It’s for) people who are just casually tuning in to FOX,” White said. “Say you flip through the television. There are 57,000 college football games on, and you see No. 2 vs. No. 3. You think, ‘This must be a pretty important game. This is No. 2 and No. 3!’ So, even if you’re uneducated about it, everyone understands what that means.”
