Squirrel Girl Getting Her Own Series

News

squirrel-girl-Art-AdamsNewsarama is reporting that Squirrel Girl will be getting her own ongoing series by writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson starting in January.

Skitch Commentary First of all, huge props to Marvel for creating another ongoing series with a female lead. I will admit, I am real cynical about Marvel’s attempts at diversity having any real legs, but this is by far the most books they have published at once with female leads, so you have to give them some credit for that.

Also, huge props for giving her a very distinctive, non-pinup look, even if it is a huge departure from the cute Squirrel Girl that has been appearing in comics for a while now.

I think it’s a great idea to give Squirrel Girl her own book.  She definitely has a cult following.  I have no idea if this book can do well, but I definitely give Marvel credit for trying something different.  If it’s in the same vein as She-Hulk and Ms Marvel (two of my favorite Marvel titles), then I think it can carve a unique niche for itself.

I don’t know too much about the creative team… Ryan North writes Dinosaur Comics, which I have only seen in passing. He also edited the book “Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die” which was a great idea, but I thought the execution was a little flat at times (no fault of North…he didn’t write the stories).

I know Erica Henderson does Subatomic Party Girls for Monkeybrain, but I have never really read that comic either.

I definitely will be adding this to my pull list.  I just hope we get some appearances from the other Great Lakes Avengers.  I loved that book!
