While most television dramas heavily rely on flashbacks to quickly move plotlines forward, HBO’s Game of Thrones has intentionally avoided this technique… until now.
During a Q&A session with students in Spain (where the show is currently filming portions of its new season), showrunners and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said that they will break their own “no flashback” rule that they have had in place since the show’s first season.
“Making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams, or flashbacks,” a rough translation of what the producers—we’re not sure which one—said. “We already failed the first two, and this season we broke the third. So yes, this season will finally have flashbacks.”
EW reports that a flashback will even take place in the show’s season premiere.
