Cain Velasquez was apparently willing to defend his heavyweight title against Fabricio Werdum even with a torn meniscus in his right knee, but it was only after he sprained his MCL in the same knee that he had to pull himself from the match.
According to his coach at the American Kickboxing Academy, Javier Mendez, Velasquez was dealing with a torn meniscus for a lengthy period of time but suffered the sprained MCL during a training session on Oct. 16 or 17.
Velasquez is scheduled to undergo surgery today in San Jose, Calif. The surgery will fix the torn meniscus, while rehab will be needed for the sprained MCL.
