Murtz On The Scene: Exclusive Interview With Degrassi‘s Melinda Shankar & Ana Golja

We are counting down to Degrassi‘s 14th Season premiere!

On July 29, I attended the Season 13 Finale Screening party at the MTV Building in downtown Toronto.

Just prior to screening the final two episodes of the season, I caught up with a variety of castmembers to discuss what would happen in the finale and to offer a preview of what to expect when the show returns next week.

I sat down with Melinda Shankar & Ana Golja to talk about the effective way that Degrassi manages to bring in new characters. I asked Melinda about her character’s storyline with Leo and the struggles that Alli Bhandari went through in Season 13. I asked Melinda why Dallas just didn’t pop Alli’s abusive boyfriend in the face when he had the chance and if that might have sent the wrong message. I asked Melinda to reflect on all of Alli’s past boyfriends and which one she would have picked for her character (if she could go back). Ana talked about Zoe’s major storyline this season and the trial that her character had to go to when she was sexually violated at a party. We discussed how so many teens identified with the storyline and the larger message that it offered. I asked Ana if she saw any similarities in herself and her character considering Zoe also is an actress. With Melinda now being one of the veterans of the show, I asked her if she had any advice for Ana (who is a relatively new castmember). Finally, I asked both who they would pick if they were given the chance to play any other Degrassi character for an episode.
