Rory MacDonald Set To Debut New Mohawk Hairstyle And New Nickname In Next Fight

News, Top Story

It might have taken him awhile to realize it, but Canada’s best active fighter now realizes how important getting attention is in the UFC.

While Rory MacDonald has quietly racked up wins in eight of his last nine fight and been victorious against three Top 10 contenders in a row (Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley, and Tarec Saffiedine) which has put him next in line for a title shot, it seems like he is often overlooked by fans. The reason for this is clearly because of his quiet demeanour and clean-cut look.

All that is about to change.

MacDonald has dumped his previous nickname “Ares” and will now be referred to as “Red King.” In addition, the top welterweight contender has gone from a regular buzzcut to a complete mohawk as he clearly wants fans to not only recognize his talent but his marketability as well.

MMAFighting reports that the nickname came from his teammate Kajan Johnson. The name Rory is an Anglicized form of an Irish/Gaelic name that means Red King.

MacDonald is expected to meet the winner of the Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler December 6 contest.
