Murtz On The Scene – The Voice 7 Finale – Exclusive Red Carpet Video Interview With Damien

Damien is used to beating the odds.

The Team Adam member was voted into The Voice‘s season 7 finale as the wildcard entrant after initially being eliminated last week and, as a result, sang for the win on Monday night. The show’s final competitive episode of the season asked contestants to sing a final solo that was picked by their coach, a duet with said coach and, for the first time ever, their own single which was also accompanied with a music video.

While there is no question that Damien can sing, he has had a tougher road than his finale comrades as he has been asked to sing songs that appeal to an older crowd. While I would like to see him try Sam Smith, Chris Brown, or Drake, Adam Levine clearly disagrees and suggested “A Song For You” by Donnie Hathaway and chose to join his pupil on perennial musical reality competition stalwart “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” by Elton John for a duet. Sitting in the live audience, I legitimately heard a younger fan ask her mother who Elton John was and while that depressed me as well, it was an accurate assessment of why girls of the same age are head over heels for Chris Jamison. While he is certainly good-looking, he is also current.

With that said, Damien smashed his original song as “Soldier” was a tune that was completely in his wheelhouse.

While many have been calling Chris Jamison the underdog of the season, I actually believe it is Damien.

After the show, I had the chance to catch up with Damien (after getting a great deal on a flight from Air Canada’s website that also included some amazing service). We discussed whether he selects his own wardrobe, and the pressures he faced as he entered the show’s final day of competition as the wildcard entrant (that fans voted back in). We also chatted about what it was like to face two other Team Adam members in the finale and he explained what it was like to collaborate with the Maroon 5 frontman considering the fact that Levine shares the same musical taste as Matt McAndrew and that a high falsetto is something that he shares with Chris Jamison. I asked Damien about his final three competitive performances on the series and if he had a favourite from the night. Finally Damien offers a preview of his first album.
