WWE Royal Rumble 2015 News: Reasons Behind Seth Rollins Being Added To Title Match

News

Why did WWE make the change?

The WWE Royal Rumble 2015 will feature the traditional 30 man Royal Rumble match as well as a WWE World Heavyweight Title.

The match was originally scheduled to be champion Brock Lesnar defending for the third time against John Cena. In recent weeks, there has been concern over this match for a variety of reasons. Brock has limited dates and his contract is set to run out around Wrestlemania 31, and WWE officials are worried about fan reaction. When this happened before – at Wrestlemania 20 – the crowd ended up turning on Brock and his opponent Goldberg for being on their way out.

In addition, WWE does not want to have Cena lose to Lesnar again if Lesnar is going to leave the company, as it would make Cena look weaker.

This past Monday on Raw, WWE added Seth Rollins to the match to make it a three way. It was dicussed over the past several weeks and finalized before Raw. This leaves WWE with many more possibilities heading into Mania.

Having Lesnar win the match, then having Roman Reigns win the Royal Rumble appears to still be the plan. However, with the change adding Rollins, WWE has the flexibility to go in another direction.

One idea being floated is that WWE could have Heyman turn on Lesnar and join with Rollins, screwing Lesnar out of the title. This would turn Lesnar babyface for the final part of this WWE run. This also would allow Cena to escape the match without jobbing. That seems to be the common thread with Rollins being added to the match.
