Demythify: Top 10 DC Comics Convergence Two-Shot Mini-Series; Batman, Justice League & More Spoilers Via April & May 2015 New 52 Solicitations!

Columns, News, Top Story

Welcome to Demythify! This week we tackle the Convergence two-shots.

DC Comics is releasing 40 two-shot Convergence tie-in mini-series over April and May 2015. I’ve struggled to sort out which books I will be picking because there are so many that actually interest me. What will say at the outset is that I consider the two most important Convergence related series to be the main Convergence weekly series and the Booster Gold two-shot.

The weekly series because it seemingly carries us from the endings of Multiversity, New 52 Future’s End and Earth 2 World’s End to the experimental DC universe titles world post-Convergence. Regarding Booster Gold, since he is a time-traveler and someone who can traverse the multiverse, that would set him up nicely to play a large role in Convergence.

Accepting that, the below are my Top 10 Convergence two-shots. My criteria for determining which to pick up were the eras and characters I enjoyed at the time and was actually reading them. The April and May 2015 DC Comics Solicitations follow for each two-shot mini-series.

Spoilers follow in case you haven’t seen the solicitations.

TOP 10

Fave eras / series / characters

(10) Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes

I also fondly remember the late 1970’s version of Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Sideburns for everyone! I hope this two-shot channels the spirit of that era.

(9) Batman and the Outsiders

The early 1980’s launch of Batman and the Outsiders is a series I fondly remember, particularly the art of Jim Aparo. This era is revisited during Convergence by beloved Manhunter scribe Marc Andreyko.

(8) Justice League America

I love the last several issues of the Justice League of America run that featured the Detroit-based Justice League. A big reason is, who wouldn’t like these lovable losers? Plus we had awesome art by Luke McDonnell who would go on to work with writer John Ostrander on the defining iteration of the Suicide Squad. The last few issues here were part of one of my fave 1980’s mini-series: Legends. I’m jazzed to see these characters together again.

That said, I don’t know why DC Comics dropped the “of” in Justice League of America for this two-shot. The Justice League America (sans “of”) didn’t happen till years later. Is this a copyright thing? A bit weird if you ask me.

(7) Green Lantern Corps

This 1980’s era version of the team is one of my faves. We had Dave Gibbons on art followed by Joe Staton. We had Predator and the Demolition Team tangle with Hal Jordan. We had Hal quit the Corps and John Stewart take over and reveal his secret identity to the world. We also had Guy Gardner during the run that led to the book being renamed Green Lantern Corps. So glad to see this era revisited. Plus, gorgeous covers by 1990’s classic Starman artist Tony Harris.

(6) New Teen Titans

Classic writer Marv Wolfman returns to his “kids” joined by a modern era top artist in Nicola Scott? WIN! Tiger’s blood level win. ;) Plus, if I can’t have a 1980’s Doom Patrol two-shot as part of Convergence, I’ll take the Tangent Doom Patrol who we’ll see here.

(5) Green Arrow

While I would have preferred a creator Mike Grell / Long Bow Hunters era Green Arrow, this era is right after it and introduced us to Oliver Queen’s son Connor Hawke who succeeded Queen as GA. Curious how this series will work, but I love the pre-Hawke era, so I’ll check this out to see what Grell influences are here. Plus, Rags Morales on art is a HUGE draw for me as well.

(4) Shazam

I remain a huge fan of Captain Marvel and all those Fawcett comics characters that DC Comics purchases a generation ago. While Captain Marvel is now just Shazam at DC Comics, this two-shot still looks great with classic Mike Mignola pencilled Gotham by Gaslight Batman tangling with the Shazam kids. Looks like fun.
