  • Convergence #8 – Not a bad little event, although oft-forgotten characters I loved got to shine in it, so I’m happy there.

  • Convergence Blue Beetle #2 – Ted Kord is my favorite super hero. I will buy many comics featuring him.

  • Convergence Booster Gold #2 – Booster Gold is my second favorite super hero. I will buy many comics featuring him.

  • Convergence Detective Comics #2 – I’ve enjoyed this for what it is even if Helena is kind of a bloodthirsty psycho in it.

  • Convergence Shazam #2 – The first issue was fantastic. I will never understand why DC rarely gets Captain Marvel right.

  • Divinity #4 – Eh. It’s been okay. Not much has really happened and it’s been one of Valiant 3.0’s weaker offerings, but I’ll get it to finish the mini.

  • Ivar, Timewalker #5 – Yay for more Ivar. Such a fun series. It almost makes up for the lack of Quantum & Woody and Archer & Armstrong. ALMOST.

  • Providence #1 – Okay, I really like Alan Moore. Who doesn’t enjoy him to some degree? I loved The Courtyard but I HATED Neonomicon. Of course from all reports, Alan Moore hated it just as much as only did it because he had bills to pay. From Interviews, Providence is a motivated Alan Moore again and although I am wary of this series, I’m pulling the first issue to see if this is a keeper. It’s Lovecraftia after all.

  • Providence #1 – I’ll admit that I’ve never read HP Lovecraft, and have never had much interest in his work (and have even complained about his pervasive influence on comics writers), but I am pretty much always going to check out a new series by Alan Moore, especially when I expect it to be more From Hell than League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

  • Material #1 – Oddly, I feel much the same way about a new series by Ales Kot. I haven’t loved a lot of his most recent work, like Secret Avengers and The Surface, but I’m always going to check out what he’s doing, in the hopes that it’s going to be as good as his Zero is.

  • Sex #21 – If you are upset with the way Batman is being treated at DC, you could do a lot worse than read Sex, which is Joe Casey’s version of the character, post-retirement, and trying to figure out how to live his life (and, obviously, have relations with women). It’s much more nuanced than the covers and title would have you believe.

  • Ivar, Timewalker #5 – I’m pretty certain this is my favourite Valiant title right now, and this new arc promises appearances by Archer, Armstrong, and the Eternal Warrior, so I’m extra excited to get my hands on it.

  • All-New Hawkeye #3 – This is the only Marvel title on my pull-list this week (I’m debating getting Old Man Logan as well), which says a lot about how much Secret Wars is affecting me (really, I’m not even saving money; just buying more indies). Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez have a very nice take on this book, and Perez’s art on the flashbacks is stunning.

Another octet of ripe number ones. My money (literally!) is on OML and WMD. The latter is bound to be a sleeper hit wink emoticon

  • ALL-NEW HAWKEYE #3
Brilliant collaboration and beautiful renditions!! It’d be nice if Matt Fraction ever decided to release #22 of his series from captivity frown emoticon

  • CAPTAIN CANUCK {2nd Series} #1
Who stands guard for our country?!? None other than Mr. Red-White-and-Red. Let’s see if Chapter House hooks a brand new generation. It’s shameful to admit how many Canadians shrug and pass on this character.

  • MULTIVERSITY: PAX AMERICANA DIRECTOR’S CUT
Originally meant to be the DC for the actual first issue, this sports a new cover by Frank Quietly. All the Watchmen aficionados can peruse once more this tale with extras.

  • UNCANNY AVENGERS: ULTRON FOREVER
This sounds more exciting when it was solicited. The diverse line-up from the divergent timelines is a cool concept but Ultron himself has only appeared in name. For this final issue, there better be some satisfactory delivery.

We spend so much time talking about Secret Wars and Convergence, so I am starting off this week with the “other” summer crossovers.

  • Sonic Universe #76 – World Unite Crossover is finally starting!  It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for this one!  This time it’s not just Mega Man and Sonic, a wide variety of Capcom and Sega characters are going to be involved in this one.  I loved Worlds Collide and Mega Man is consistently one of my favorite comics every month.  This should be a great comic!
  • Swords Of Sorrow Masquerade And Kato Special #1 – Swords of Sorrow has been excellent so far.  The Vampirella/Jennifer Blood crossover was terrific and I’m really looking forward to this one, even if I don’t know the characters all that well.  That is one thing Dynamite does very well, make characters very accessible for readers who might not be familiar with them.
  • Sabrina #3 – This companion book to Afterlife with Archie might actually be even better than Afterlife.  This is a very haunting story.  As a lifelong Stephen King fan, I have wanted some good horror comics for a long time, and Sabrina and Afterlife are probably the best ones on the shelf since Route 666 came to an end.
  • Divinity #4 – This series has been a damn roller coaster.  At times I love it, at times I feel lost. BUT, it’s definitely held my attention and I can’t wait to see how it ties up and what the future holds for these characters.
  • Convergence – Convergence finally comes to an end.  On a whole, I’ve really enjoyed this event, and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up.  I just hope that some of these characters will be sticking around in some capacity afterwards.  Of the tie-ins, my picks are Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, World’s Finest, and Shazam.
  • Secret Wars – Quite a few Secret Wars tie ins make their debut this week.  I am still trying to find my footing on Secret Wars, but I did like a lot of the tie-ins from last week.  For this week, my picks are: Inferno, Infinity Gauntlet, and Secret Wars 2099.
