This week I look at Superman / Wonder Woman #19.
It struck me that someone ranking really high is sending others to capture/kill the lesser Man of Steel. Who may not be so obvious but the reason…It’s obvious that Amanda Waller sent her Task Force X “Suicide Squad” to subdue the Power Couple but who is the mystery man speaking to her? One can assume it’s Mr. President. She accepts her losses, for now.
This interested observer sure as hell looks a lot like Maxwell Lord who made his DC Comics New 52 debut in the pages of OMAC. If that is Max, he most certainly has a vested interest in the lovebirds.
For those of you totally amiss, pre-Flashpoint, Lord founded the JLI and appeared to be a benefactor. Years later, he went dark and killed Ted Kord (Blue Beetle). After that, he had loftier aspirations: mind-possessing Superman and cutting a swath of wanton destruction. Wonder Woman took him down the only way she could – she snapped his neck, killing him. This caused a rift in the Trinity all before INFINITE CRISIS.
Clark realizes that the hunt for him could only come from the very top. He flies to the White House to seek an audience with the Commander-in-Chief.
Whoever POTUS is communicating with (Waller? Luthor?), the convo becomes insignificant due to the unannounced but not unexpected visitor.
