Back in February, Shout! Factory surprised fans of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers by releasing Super Sentai: Zyuranger. This was the Japanese show that was cannibalized for the after school series hasn’t let go since 1993. While America was watching the morphed Rangers program, kids in Tokyo were relishing Super Sentai: Gosei Sentai Dairanger. The show is where the later episodes clipped out footage of the White Rangers. Dairanger changed things around in the origins of man. Super Sentai: Gosei Sentai Dairanger: The Complete Series has all 50 episodes.

The opening story goes back 80,000 years when civilization had three tribes that for a while lived peacefully. Sadly the Gorma Tribe, reverted to their war-ish ways and attacked the Dai. This battle lastesd tens of thousands of years. It only came to an end when mythical Ch’i Beasts arrived on the scene. Over time, five Dai warriors have controlled these beasts. Now the Gorma are ready for another offensive. It’s up to Master Kaku to recruit five young kids with enough Ch’i to harness the power of the beasts. This crew of rangers includes Red, Yellow, Blue, Pink and Green.

The show ups the action especially with the amazing dragon beast that flies through the air with a robotic grace. The monster budget seems to be a little higher than the previous collection. The rubber suits are impressive and scary. The main villains from Gorma look like they were discovered at a fetish night party. They’re covered in leather and ready to get nasty. The kids are a lot less campy than the ones in the American version. This show rates up with Ultraman. For long time fans of Power Rangers, it remains a thrill to get to view the original version after decades of just repurposed clips.

The video is 1:33:1 full frame. The transfers bring out the detail in the rubber suits. The audio is Dolby Digital Mono Japanese. The episodes are subtitled in English so you can follow the action. You won’t get to hear Tommy’s voice come from the Green or White Ranger mask.

No bonus features.

Super Sentai: Gosei Sentai Dairanger: The Complete Series is the perfect holiday gift for that relative who wants to know the true secret of the Power Rangers.
