As always, spoilers ahoy.

We open with a flashback to Matt and Foggy’s earlier days, with them trying to crash some sort of high society party. Matt’s flashback hair is killing me. Security is about to escort him out when a stunning greek girl says he’s with her. End of cold open.

If you haven’t guessed who the Greek woman is, congratulations, you managed to find a tv show whose source material you knew nothing about.

Back in the present day Matt is NOT amused that his college ex girlfriend Elektra broke into his apartment to hire him for some legal shenanigans. Clearly their relationship ended on a sour note, and all Matt wants is for her to leave.

The next morning at the office Matt and Foggy discuss their poverty and lack of clients now that the douchey DA is interfering with their business. Karen arrives and after a cute little awkward moment with Matt, tells them something about Castle’s case isn’t sitting well with her. She knows Reyes is covering something up. Foggy gets angry that Karen is still risking her safety. He storms off to his office while Matt and Karen have another moment. Foggy then comes back to say a huge deposit’s been made to their account, and Matt isn’t happy.

Flashback again. Elektra is dismissing Matt as a hanger on desperate to belong somewhere and that’s why he crashes faculty parties. He in turn tells her she’s a bored socialite who has time to study a stranger’s hair and shoes because daddy’s money can’t buy her the unexpected. Intrigued, she takes him outside and they steal a car.

Back in the present, the ADA shows up trying to pressure Foggy into giving over all his files on the Grotto case, but Foggy won’t budge without a subpoena. Matt meanwhile is intently listening to the functions of a secure door at another building. Back in flashback land he and Elektra break into his dead dad’s old gym. She grills him about his dad, and he reluctantly tells her about him. Them she abruptly kicks at him and he dodges, and I swear the more he dodges the more excited she gets. Happy her suspicions about him hiding hidden talents were true, they end up schtupping in the ring. I’ll skip this part thanks.

Okay good, that’s over with. Back in the present, Matt has apparently heard all he needs to and sets about getting up to the rooftop next door so he can eavesdrop on Elektra’s business meeting. Karen meanwhile shows up at Ben Urich’s old paper and talks to his editor about the Castle story. She convinces him the DA is hiding something and to let her search his archives. Elektra meanwhile secretly hacks the server at Roxxon while letting their executives treat her like a silly ditz as Matt listens.

Foggy is at the bar meeting his lawyer ex from last season, seeking her help. Reyes called his subpoena bluff and is trying her damnedest to kill their law firm. His ex reluctantly agrees to help him, but only by telling him Reyes is on track to be Mayor and to not screw with her.

At the newspaper Karen and the editor find a thin scrap of proof about Castle’s family, a news report on a gangland shoot-out at the merry-go-round Castle was moping at last episode. It’s not much, but it gets Karen inspired.

Karen rushes to meet Matt for dinner and things are OH MY GOD SO EFFING AWKWARD IT PHYSICALLY HURTS TO WATCH IT. Karen heads to the bathroom and Matt gets a gloaty call from Elektra teasing him about his rooftop stunt. He tells her to go to hell, so she “fires” him. We go back to the flashbacks and Matt and Elektra breaking in to the house of one of her father’s clients, (and as a quick aside can I just say how happy I am that a Greek actress was cst as a Greek character? It’s always nice to see Hollywood resist the urge to whitewash). They chat jokingly about their future, until Matt hears someone come into the house. Elektra goes to handle it, but Matt follows when he hears a thud, and finds Elektra standing on the throat of the man who had his father killed.

Back in the present Matt and Karen have changed restaurants to a far less pretentious place and the conversation is a lot less awkward. The date ends a lot better than it started, and they sit on Karen’s stoop and kiss. This time she invites him up, but he declines, fearing he’ll somehow ruin the evening if he does. They’re so cute together once they get past the awkwardness.

As Matt walks home he hears the city, hears crime, and struggles to resist doing something. In flashback land, Elektra tells Matt how she found his dad’s killer, and encourages Matt to beat on him. And it’s outright f**king DISTURBING how visibly sexually excited she’s getting by watching Matt punch the guy. In the end though Matt’s not a killer, and refuses to finish the man off. She looks utterly heartbroken when he refuses, and leaves as Matt calls the police.

Present day Matt goes to Elektra’s penthouse to ask her why she did that, and she laments the “glorious darkness” inside him, that she craves to see him truly let out. As they’re talking Matt hears men coming from a few floors down, and Elektra changes for battle, having expected them. It’s the Yakuza, coming to get her for her earlier hacking stunt, and she expects Matt to help her, having stolen his DD suit from his place and asking if he needs a push.

See you shortly for episode 6!
