Box Office: Zootopia Continues Domination As It Nears $600M Worldwide; Allegiant Posts Worst Debut For Divergent Series

Box Office, Columns

Going to keep this one short and sweet as the box office the weekend before the release of Orphan Fight (aka Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice) was pretty humdrum. We had Disney’s Zootopia once again retaining its crown as box-office champ for third consecutive weekend as it posted $38 million and seeing its attendance drop less than 26% from the previous weekend. Overseas it has posted earnings of more than $390 million to supersede the domestic earnings of $200M+. The latest (final?) installment of Lionsgate’s Divergent series, Allegiant, posted the worst opening for the franchise with just $29 million. That’s a far cry from the $54 million Divergent made in 2014 or the $52 million Insurgent made this same weekend one year ago. Ouch.

Sony’s Sunday parishioner-friendly Miracles from Heaven opened mid-week but would pull in $15 million in the waning days of Spring Break. The only other film to post double-digit earnings was Paramount’s 10 Cloverfield Lane (the same studio I might add decided to drop the March 18th release of its animated The Little Prince – it has since been picked up by Netflix for a fall release) with $12.5 million.

To see the full results of the Top 10 skip to the bottom. For those wondering what will be the #1 film of the weekend, it will be Universal with the upset as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will best the opening of Batman vs. Super… just kidding. No way a sequel 14 years after MBFGW was a box-office smash (I think still holding the record for the biggest money earner for a film that never placed first in all the weekends it played – which was a total of 52 weeks, including an 18-week stretch at No. 10 or better!) will beat the fight among the two hero orphans. If Deadpool can open with $132 million, the least BvS can do is open north of Man of Steel‘s $116 million debut from June 2013, right?
