Box Office: Disney Dominates The World With The Jungle Book And Captain America: Civil War

Box Office, Columns

For the third consecutive weekend Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book finished atop the box office. Finishing with an estimated $42.4 million, which was far more than my personal estimate of $35 million, Disney’s big money-maker of the spring more than doubled the combined earnings of newcomer comedies Keanu (No. 3 with $9.35M) and Mother’s Day (No. 4 with $8.3M).

Universal’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War took a 51% hit in attendance as reviews and poor word of mouth have stagnated the prequel/sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman. In the battle of animated releases, Zootopia withstood the opening of Ratchet & Clank to finish with $5 million in earnings and No. 6 in the Top 10.

With the upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War in the U.S. on Friday, May 6th (well, Thursday night if we’re being honest), Disney has opened the next installment of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe in foreign territories where it hauled in an impressive $200.2 million, which is second to The Avengers: Age of Ultron when comparing MCU films debuting overseas. Earlier box office tracking has Civil War opening with $185-$200 million this weekend in the U.S., which would place the superhero flick contending with Age of Ultron to have the fourth-highest opening of all time behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Marvel’s The Avengers.

The breakdown of Civil War‘s opening in foreign territories is as followed: Korea led with a $28.9 million opening, followed by Mexico ($20.6M), the UK ($20.5M), Brazil ($12.3M), Australia ($10.9M), France ($10.1M), Germany ($8.1M), Taiwan ($8.1M), Philippines ($7.5M), Japan ($7.1M), Hong Kong ($6.8M), Thailand ($6.0M), Malaysia ($5.1M) and Spain ($4.4M).

Outside of the Top 10, A24 expanded the release of Green Room into 470 theaters where it brought in $960k. The Weinstein Company’s Sing Street added 79 theaters and earned an estimated $330k, and Sony Pictures Classics added 20 theaters to Susan Sarandon’s The Meddler which grossed $174.3k.
