First, they tried to dupe you about Harley Quinn (spoilers here) and now they’re at it again with Wonder Woman. Sigh. Let me begin the ritual debunking.
DC Comics Rebirth Spoilers for Wonder Woman #19 follow.
Yesterday was a big day for DC Comics as Action Comics #976 (spoilers here) tied into The Watchmen Rebirth as did Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #17 (spoilers here) and the Flash #19 (spoilers here).
However, some pundits have suggested that yesterday’s Wonder Woman #19 also ties into Watchmen Rebirth. And, they’re likely wrong.
The DC Comics Rebirth comics that have tied into the Watchmen saga have either Mr. Oz as a recurring feature in the book or an artifact from the Watchmen at play like the yellow smiley button with the blood stain.
Do you see either of these things in Wonder Woman #19? Or even something that aren’t those two types of things, but tie into the Watchmen lore? The answer is: no.
The “Truth” about Wonder Woman is being unveiled slowly in this DC Rebirth series. I can’t imagine the big reveal behind the Truth of Wonder Woman is Doctor Manhattan or Mr. Oz, who many think is Ozymandias of the Watchmen. It is more likely a powerful Greek God is at a play or a Mister Mxtzptlk type character that can change reality; I’m not as familiar with Wonder Woman’s rogues so I welcome your thoughts at what or who writer Greg Rucka is building to.
It is just not likely or plausible that Doctor Manhattan or the the Watchmen are solely behind the prolonged Wonder Woman Rebirth opus by Greg Rucka. For this to lead to a forced tie-in to the Watchmen Rebirth would mean that Greg Rucka built his whole run on an editorial edict which was the kind of thing that pushed him away from DC a few years ago; in fact the freedom, light touch editorial, for this run is what in part lured him back to DC.
Will a small part of this Wonder Woman run eventually tie into the Watchmen Rebirth 2017 event? Possibly, but not in the big major way some have suggested; the Watchmen are not behind what ails WW.
That said, every core DC Rebirth hero / heroine will likely be part of the Watchmen event as they were in DC Universe Rebirth #1.
Don’t be duped; be vigilant.
