DC Comics Rebirth Spoilers & Review: Green Lanterns #25 Has The First Lantern Strike & Who & What Are The Secrets Of The First 7 Green Lantern?

Spoilers, Top Story

DC Comics Rebirth Spoilers and Review for Green Lanterns #25 follow.

I love the main cover for Green Lanterns #25 penciled by Brad Walker.

That said, Brandon Peterson has a pretty trippy and glossy variant cover for the issue.

The book opens with Rogue Guardian of the Galaxy Rami, stealthly possessed by Volthoom the First Lantern, taking Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz to the Vault of Shadowns the sister structure to the Chamber of Shadows. While the Chamber was a prison the Vault is a Mausoleum where Rami-Volthoom says the Guardians of the Galaxy keep their secrets.

I it includes glass coffins, I believe, for all 7 of the first Green Lanterns yet 1 is unoccopied. Rami-Volthoom was in the middle of telling the Green Lanterns how they died when…

…Tyran’r, the Vault of Shadows sentinel attacks the “intruders”. He recognizes Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, but they don’t recognize him.

Tyran’r acknowledges Rami, but realizes he’s possessed, but before he can say anything, Rami-Volthoom puts him stasis noting that it appears Tyran’r, 1 of the first 7 Green Lanterns, has gone mad.

We then flashback ten billion years ago to Teen Titans’ Starfire’s home planet of Tamaran where we see…

…Tyran’r recuited to be 1 of the first 7 Green Lanterns due to a crisis that has befallen the universe then.

Back in modern day, Rami-Volthoom has left Simon and Jessica behind to find the inner crypt of the Vault of Shadows to…

…collect the First Lantern Volthoom’s First Ring!

Volthoom sheds Rami from himself, although its not clear what state Rami is in, and reveals himself! He’s been de-aged and restored by the first ring and he’s after Jessica Cruz; he has no interest in Simon Baz.

We then flashback ten billion years ago to the planet Colu, the home of Superman villain Brainiac and Legion of Super-Heroes’ Brainiac 5 to see…

…Kaja Dox the second of the first 7 Green Lanterns recruited.

These 2 join 2 others revealed in Green Lanterns #23 and #24: (a) We have Alitha who is from the Third World…

…which pre-dates the Fourth World of the New Gods whose mthology was created by Jack Kirby…

…and (b) Z’Kran Z’Rann of Mars…

….who is a White Martian.

With Tyran’r of Tamaran and Kaja Dox who is from Yod-Colu, we have 4 of the first 7 Green Lanterns from ten billion years ago revealed.

Back in modern day, Volthoom escapes Simon Baz’s prison while Jessica Cruz tends to Rami. Volthoom also overpowers Simon Baz’s ring…

…destroying it… yet his tattoo still glows with the power of the Green Lantern?

The reason Volthoom is after Jessica Cruz is because her Green Lantern ring is either fused with or mader from Volthoom’s Travel Ring; a ring her created before he stole the first ring from the Guardians of the Galaxy billions of years ago. The Travel Ring allows the bearer to travel through time and the multiverse.

Volthoom tries to reclaim the Travel Ring which seems I conflict with the Green Lantern ring. However, Jessica Cruz’s will is strong and she escapes with Simon Baz…

….ten billion years into the past for the next arc…

….”Out of Time” where they in fact will train the first 7 Green Lanterns. These GLs are foreshadowed on the cover to Green Lanterns #28.

We have met 4 of 7 first Green Lanterns with 3 to go.

So…

Writer Sam Humphries defies the odds by making a series about 2 newer DC charcters a must-read book. Green Lanterns is the best GL book on the stands and is 1 of the Top 5 comic books DC Comics publishes as part of Rebirth and beyond. Robson Rocha is also one of DC Rebirth’s best pencillers and he really poured it on for this milestone 25th issue. This series is just amazing and remains a twice monthly book when others featuring more established characters like Aquaman, Cyborg and Deathstroke have been reduced to monthly series. I recommend this series and this issue highly. 8.5 out of 10. In the next “Out of Time” arc we’ll learn the second history of the first 7 Green Lanterns. should be exciting.
