SDCC 2017, DC Comics Rebirth and Doomsday Clock Spoilers follow.

During the DC Comics Spotlight on DC President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns panel at San Diego Comic Con 2017 (SDCC 2017) the Watchmen Rebirth or Watchmen vs DC Rebirth mini-series Doomsday Clock was elaborated on in words and art! The highlights are below.

    • Doomsday Clock begins in November 2017 because writer Geoff Johns had fond memories as a kid of reading comic books around the U.S. Thanksgiving break from school.
    • The segue from DC Universe Rebirth #1 to Doomsday Clock was mentioned. Wally West’s return as the Flash in the one-shot is a “metaphor” for all the things they felt was missing in New 52 that would return in DC Rebirth.
    • It was clearly mentioned that Johns did not want “Wally’s return to overshadow Dr. Manhattan.” There you have it; he has been named! So, Superman vs. Doctor Manhattan and/or the whole Watchmen?
    • “If there’s one being out there that could mess with time in such a radical way and challenge hope it’s Dr. Manhattan.”
    • Panels from Doomsday Clock are released (see above).
    • While the length of the Doomsday Clock mini-series was not revealed, it was noted that by the time the last issue ships that all pf DC Rebirth will have caught up and take place in that timeframe that sets up the “future of the DCU”.
    • “I didn’t want Dr. Manhattan to show up just as a gimmick or a cameo.”
    • “There are people out there who believe the Watchmen should never be touched. But I have a story and I believe in it.”
    • “There’s so much great thematic and important stuff about what these heroes mean to us. That’s what Doomsday Clock is about. It encompasses everything from Action Comics #1 to today.”
    • Geoff Johns is giddy over a particular moment in Doomsday Clock namely “seeing the smartest man from one world meeting the smartest man from another – and the smartest man in the DC Universe is Lex Luthor.” So that would Ozymandias vs. Lex Luthor.
    • Since Batman has the Comedian’s button, is the latter back and will it be a team up or a battle between the two?
